MDS had recently acquired a competitor located approximately 30 miles from its main location in Sunnyvale, California. Neither facility was operating efficiently, nor were they achieving maximum productivity of staff and function, and the company was now faced with redundancies.
UGL Equis was selected to provide strategic and spatial planning for the potential consolidation of these facilities.
UGL Equis began by working with both corporate and local leadership to examine the potential for consolidation of the two facilities addressing specifics of business process, work flow, material handling, administration and culture fit.
With a detailed analysis of space, staff, function and support, UGL Equis determined that a simple consolidation of one facility into the other was not feasible. In addition, there was a strong desire to improve the overall fit and finish of the facility to a true “state of the art” research, design, engineering and pre manufacturing center for highly advanced medical analysis devices.
UGL Equis’ set of solutions included defining the segregation of functions and staff to appropriate facilities - two existing facilities and one new building all adjacent to one another, as well as defining and planning both the renovation of existing spaces and placement of new labs and engineering spaces. Full development of budgets and implementation requirements and initiation of project management work including selection of architect and construction teams was also provided.
